Learning & Leisure for Over 55's
A new centre offering educational classes, workshops, social events and activities for the over 55s, is now under way in Winchcombe.  BeSocial@GL54 is running a range of leisure and learning activities and classes, the majority of them run by qualified and professional tutors.  The scheme is open to anyone living in the Winchcombe and surrounding villages aged over 55 – whether early retired, semi-retired, working or not working.  This month kicked off with six week courses on Fridays for IPad and computer training and yoga and on Tuesday March 7th, a weekly ‘Move it or lose it’ class begins.
Cheltenham wigs are running a one-day advice session on March 28th about managing hair loss for those with cancer or Alopecia. Other courses now taking bookings are art and illustration, starting Friday 5th May, mindfulness and well being starting Tuesday 9th May, Latin classes begin on 4th July, plus singing for fun and fitness, belly-dancing, creative writing, flower arranging, walking rugby and cooking for one all have dates being finalised.
The project is the brain-child of Carol Baker, Manager of Winchcombe Day Care Centre and her Deputy Vicky Weaver. Carol said: “The Day Centre facilities in Langley Road are extensive, but are currently only used three days out of seven and solely for day care of the elderly. The building is a wonderful resource which we want to utilise fully for the benefit of the wider community.
The Trustees of the Winchcombe Day Care Foundation charity approved the BeSocial@GL54 scheme that is now running its first classes.  Vicky said: “We had a great response to our open day in January and are now taking bookings for our Spring classes. We’re launching a website soon, but in the meantime please give me a call on 01242 603207 or email me on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
“If you have a particular interest, hobby or skill you would like to see developed as a class, workshop or activity please tell us. We will then try to find a tutor to run a class, group or activity so it can be shared with like-minded people.
“We want BeSocial@GL54 to become a place where you can meet others and develop and build on existing or new skills and talents, or learn something completely new,“ added Vicky.
Anyone interested in running a course and taking part in the information day, should contact Vicky on 01242 603207 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
