Helena Cavan
Helena Cavan is a composer/poet based locally. She originates from the Pacific Northwest of America and has been a resident of the UK since 1994. Cavan’s music creates intense emotional atmosphere, demanding to be proactively listened to – failing to function as wallpaper or background music. It combines personal interpretations of sound with musical lines that are then distinctively woven together, inspired by extra-musical sources from heaven to earth; times past and present; organic to the inorganic; and cultures near and far.
Strong musical influences combine the spontaneous styles of Charles Ives and Igor Stravinsky with the emotional depths and colourings of Mahler and Beethoven. Some of her works (e.g. the Acajatuba series) also express her environmental concerns. Naturally communicative, her music will often involve word setting. She has studied composition with Roger Briggs, Joel F. Durand and Michael Finnissy.
